Helping Your Student Remember To Take Homework Home

Many students who struggle with executive functioning skills forget to bring home all the things they will need to complete their homework. If your student struggles with this, ask her to try these suggestions so you can save trips back to school.

Write it down.

When writing an assignment on your planner or to do list, write down the books or materials you will need. At the end of the day, take the time to look at this list and check these items off as you put them in your backpack or book bag.

Make one place for homework.

Reserve a specific compartment in your backpack, a specific place in the front of your binder, or use a homework folder for worksheets that need to be completed. Write the date due at the top of each worksheet.

Use tape flags.

To keep track of books to take home do the following.

(1) Put a supply of tape flags in the front of each of your books or workbooks.

(2) When the teacher gives an assignment, stick one of the flags on the page you’ll need to work on.

(3) When it’s time to go, look for the books that have flags.

Get an extra set of textbooks or workbooks.

If your student tries these ideas and still doesn’t make it home with what she needs, it may be time to get an extra set of books or workbooks for home.  This is one of the simplest interventions with the most power to minimize the impact of not remembering to take home the necessary books and materials.
