Achieving Goals: Eight Steps to Taking Daily Action

Just as a golfer goes to the driving range, practices, and plays often to improve his or her game, goal-achievers must take regular daily action to realize goals.  Setting a goal but not taking action is the same as not even setting the goal.  To help yourself take action, try these suggestions.

  1. Refer to your goals daily.  Keep a list of your goals with you and remind yourself of your short-term and long-term focus at the beginning of each day.

  2. Keep a visual reminder of your goals in front of you. Use a wanted poster or similar tool so you can actually “see” your goals.

  3. Make a plan. Break your goal down into individual action steps and break those steps into smaller tasks with due dates as described in the article “Five Action Steps to Planning Projects.”

  4. Schedule time each day to complete your goal-directed actions. Add specific time for achieving your goals to your block schedule or use another prioritizing tool.

  5. Actively work your plan. Put in the time and effort it takes to make these life-changing changes.

  6. Remember the benefits of reaching your goals.  This is especially helpful when the going gets tough.

  7. Accept help from those you have asked to help you.  If you have told others you want their help, then let them help you!

  8. Don’t beat yourself up over mistakes and missteps along the way. Learn from these and choose to make a different choice next time.

The last one is especially important: the only way we learn is through our mistakes.
