What is the Parenting Success curriculum?

Parenting Success! is not a “parenting class” or a boxed curriculum.  For parents of children aged four to twelve, it is eight weeks of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy designed to meet the specific and unique needs of each child and family.   Parents of teenagers receive ten weeks of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy designed to meet the unique needs of teens.

  • Each week, parents learn a specific behavior management skill.
  • During the week between sessions, parents practice that skill.
  • At the beginning of each weekly session, successes and challenges are discussed and problems are solved to meet unique, individual needs of families and children.
  • Weeks 5 and 6 are critical, and parents are urged call Dr. Davenport to talk about any problems they are having.

Over 30 years of research shows that this set of  parenting skills presented in this manner works for  all types of families.    This approach is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics in their articles about behavior therapy techniques that work, research based parent training , the specifics of parent training, and effective parenting of teens with ADHD, and  is outlined in Dr. Russell Barkley’s book Taking Charge of ADHD.
